Multipurpose survey on households: trips, holidays and daily life: Istat has carried out the survey "Trips, holidays and daily life" since 1997 in order to satisfy the need of systematic information on "tourism demand" and to guarantee the availability of an integrated system of statistical information on tourism together with the "supply side" data. The survey is carried out in accordance with the EU Council Directive 95/57/EC of November, 23rd 2005 on the collection of harmonized statistical information in the field of tourism, both from the demand side and the supply side. The survey "Holidays and Trips" is conducted with CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interview) technique on a quarterly basis, with a yearly sample of about 14 thousand households on a national level (3500 households per quarter). The aim is to analyze the domestic and outbound tourist flows of residents. Furthermore, the survey gives information on the characteristics of the trips and on the socio-demographic characteristics of tourists as well as non tourists. The reference periods are the four quarters January-March, April-June, July-September and October-December. In each period, for each household member, information about trips concluded in the referring quarter is collected. The information collected makes it possible to distinguish tourism flows for personal reasons from flows for business, and to differentiate short holiday trips (1-3 overnight stays) from long holiday trips (4 or more overnight stays). Other important information is collected by the survey such as destination of the trip, duration of the stay, main purpose, organization, main type of accommodation, main mean of transport, etc.
